The Denver Broncos (7-1), which had a bye in Week 9, will begin the second half of their 2013 schedule this Sunday in the sunny climes of Southern California when they face the San Diego Chargers (4-4) in the first of five division games in their final eight contests.

Denver is the league’s highest-scoring team with 343 points (42.9 points per game), the most ever by a team through the first eight games of a season. They became the third team in NFL history to score at least 30 points in each of its first eight games (2007 New England Patriots; 2000 St. Louis Rams).

With head coach John Fox taking a leave of absence to recover from heart surgery, the Broncos have named Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio as the team’s interim head coach.

“We believe we have a good football team,” says Del Rio. “We’re on a mission. We’re on a mission to carry on and continue what Coach Fox has going with this football team. We all want to make him proud.”

Leading the charge is quarterback Peyton Manning, who has passed for 2,919 yards, the most passing yards through the first eight games in NFL history. Manning, with 62,406 career passing yards, has surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino (61,361) for 2nd place on the all-time career passing yards list (Brett Favre, 71,838).

At 4-4, the Chargers are right in the thick of the AFC playoff race. San Diego will look to bounce back from last week’s Overtime loss at Washington, ending the Chargers’ two-game winning streak. Quarterback Philip Rivers has posted a 106.5 passer rating this season, the third-best mark in the league behind Denver’s Manning (119.4) and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers (108.0).

With each team completing at least half of its 2013 slate, multiple players are on track to etch their names in the NFL record book, including Peyton Manning and San Diego Quarterback Philip Rivers.
